Reassessing Risk Tolerance After a Market Sell-Off and Rebound

May 19, 2025

A second bite at the “reassessment” apple…

A market sell-off followed by a rebound is a powerful emotional and financial stress test. Rather than ignoring the experience, thankful that it resolved itself, take the time to reassess your risk tolerance now that it’s been tested. “What if” is no longer a hypothetical. You just experienced it.

Revisiting: The Intersection of Market Volatility, Investment Philosophy, & Investment Strategy

April 23, 2025

“We have both the humility and the experience to know what we don’t know – and we don’t know what happens next. What we do know is that planning, discipline, diversification, and a sound investment strategy that is appropriately reflective of your individual goals and risk tolerance works”

We shared that in the post on market volatility in August of last year. It was August 6th, 2024, and the market had just experienced a week of gut-wrenching volatility and erosion of value. It’s hard to isolate that moment in time on a chart now, just 8 months later.

While the “what happened and why” is different this time (it always is), the more important “what should you do now” remains the same, in our view.

“Any reaction (or inaction) should be driven by the investment philosophy and strategy that guides the execution of your financial plan, which is based on your goals, risk tolerance, and tax considerations, and should transcend market events and the reasons for them”

Many investors who have wisely deployed direct indexing strategies and benefited from the strong market performance of the last 2 years now find themselves with a new challenge: portfolios overweighted with risk assets and over-concentrated in a handful of high-performing stocks, yet unable to de-risk or rebalance due to excessive capital gains tax liability. We call this portfolio “ossification” and offer some thoughts and solutions.

Investing Based on Politics Can Be a Bad Idea for Your Portfolio

Investing Based on Politics Can Be a Bad Idea for Your Portfolio

September 17, 2024

To say that politics is divisive in 2024 is the ultimate stating of the obvious, and the challenge of “walking on eggshells” to keep politics from poisoning relationships or even just candid conversations seems at times insurmountable. The attached analysis resonates with us as it provides some evidence that perhaps a disciplined investment strategy can provide some neutrality and quell emotional investment decisions related to the election.

“Political views can stir strong emotions but making investment choices based on those feelings can lead to poor portfolio decisions…It’s best to express political opinions at the ballot box, not in your portfolio.”

What is Private Credit?

What is Private Credit?

February 6, 2024

We believe that private credit solutions can offer the potential for diversification, enhanced yield and risk-adjusted total returns. As banks’ lending practices continue to be influenced by regulation and concerns around their existing loan portfolios, they have significantly reduced their new loan issuance, opening the door for private lenders to fill the void.

What is compelling to us is that private credit really does not represent a new asset class. Rather, it simply provides an opportunity for qualified investors to participate directly in the lending ecosystem vs. just being a source of capital through their bank deposits.
